News Values

News values

Todays news is converged and dispersed across a range of different technology and sources/producers.

News are mostly biased towards certain events and give opinions

Galtung and Ruge (1981) - argued that news is structured according to unspoken values, rather than discovered. Here are some of their key terms...

List of values;

Frequency - needs to be newsworthy and news are unrolling 24/7.

Threshold - This is the size of an event that's needed for it considered newsworthy.

Proximity - This value is to do with how close to home the story is. For example the Manchester and London attacks VS the Somalia attack.

 The "Other" -  Paul Giroy

Non-white people in the media are often defined according to what makes them different from the (white) majority. These values are normally negative.
