News Values Essay

Choose a news story from an online or print newspaper. Write an essay of 400-800 words using the following title:
Which news values apply in the story? Give a range of examples and make specific reference to theory including Galtung and Ruge and narrative ( Levi-Strauss). Consider the role of ideology.

In this essay, i will be applying the concept of news values, news values are criterias or basic guidelines used by the media for things such as newspapers to determine how much prominence to give to a story. The article that i will be using is from The Sun talking about Anthony Joshua's promoter confirming Deontay Wilder unification fight.

The first news values that have been introduced in the article is predictability; as it was an expected announcement as Antony Joshua and Deontay Wilder were bound to eventually fight as they both have outstanding fighting records with no losses. Eddie Hearn (Anthony Joshua’s promoter) confirmed it with no surprise and people knew it was soon to come out and it was expected it. Deontay Wilder has called out AJ many times and he stated at his post-fight previously “i want joshua, no more ducking, hiding and dodging and hiding.Lets make it happen”. The auidnce knew and predicted it was either Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder next.

In addition, another news value that is used is personalisation, the article didnt just present information about the potential fight of Deontay Wilder and Antony Joshua but also there previous fights and highlights. When Deontay Wilder defeated the former WBC champion Bermane Stiverne and the following saturday Wilder used his post-fighting interview to call out AJ for the second time. There is also personalistion of a picture of AJ TKOing Carlos Takam and a video of Tyson Fury calling out Antony Joshua and says he is ready to fight. This can show us that everyone wants to fight the current International Boxing Organization World Heavyweight Title,WBA Super World Heavyweight Title,IBF World Heavyweight Title.

Furthermore, another news value is compostion, in the news story there is also a strong section where the reporter focus on Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne fight including images. There are images on how Deontay Wilder put Bermane Stiverne in a ‘terrible state’ and ‘the referee had to stop Deontay Wilder to stop hitting Bermane Stiverne’ also ‘Deontay wilder floored Bermane Stiverne three times’. There is a bigger focus on how terrifying Deontay Wilder is than AJ and how making him the biased can be subtle message that they think that Deontay wilder can beat AJ. This can be backed up with another story from the sun where they say if AJ doesn’t lose some of his muscle that will cost him the fight and he will be in a vunerable position against the man himself Deontay Wilder.

Finally, the last news value used is threshold, only a minority of the people read sports based stories especially boxing. Anthony Joshua being a upcoming and rising star and Deontay Wilder a experienced ‘beast, in a smashing right record of 39 wins with 38 TKOs and no loses. They both have not lost a single game, making it worthy to report. If it was two boxers which was not well known people would not really have an interest towards them.

In conclusion, in this story from the sun they have applied many concepts of news values including; threshold, compostition, personalisation and predictabiliy. All these news values have bee included to make a interesting and exciting news story for the audience and not a standard story with a lot of information.

Paywalls Essay

Paywalls for and against

For

Q. What does David Simon mean by ‘slow suicide’?

This means that without a paywall, the industry will slowly continue to collapse and
slowly bankrupt

Q.Why does he mean by saying anti-paywall people “don’t understand the first thing about actual journalism”?

It costs money to cover a metro region, or a nation, or the world comprehensively, to place reporters at key points and maintain them while they cover a beat and glean information year after year.

Q.What does he mean by “journalism is a profession”?
Journalists require profession and a wages for them to live so you have to pay them for their job, lowering the revenue.

Q. What do you think made 1 million people pay for the NYT(New York Times)?
The reason why people pay for the newspapers is because there are good quality content.

Against

Q What does he mean by “Band-Aid to cover a bullet hole”?
They are implying that the news industry is dying and by using a paywall will not fix it can only temporary cover it up.

Q How much would you pay for Facebook (or any other social network)? Why this much?
I will not pay anything as someone will invent a app that is free.

What would make you pay to read a newspaper? (Value-added content)

Q. What would make you pay to read a newspaper? (Value-added content)
I like tabloid types of newspapers

In your own words put together a 200 – 300 word argument IN FAVOUR of Paywalls – to try to convince a young person who has never paid for a newspaper.
Paywalls are a great way to contribute back to the hardworking, dedicated and passive journalists and editors. It increases you likeliness to participate in  reading the news daily about stories locally and worldwide, this is due to value-added content. Which suits your preferences and you don't need to have long searches for your personalised adverts. It is also beneficial for the company and this will lead them to have more range of events, growing their audience and you being part of the journey. Also by using paywalls your stories will be updated when it needs to be and you will not miss out on anything and be on top of the game. You could also comment and write on events and share your opinion with other subscribers making it a welcoming and home-like environment. The last few years there was a decline in the news industry, a 'slow suicide' the numbers have been dropping rapidly making the ad revenue have been at its peak, the only hope according to some sources is for people to subscribe to the paywall. You can help this tragedy and not 'live under a rock'. The reason the NYT is so successful is because they have a paywall with 1 million subscribers.

News Values

News values

Todays news is converged and dispersed across a range of different technology and sources/producers.

News are mostly biased towards certain events and give opinions

Galtung and Ruge (1981) - argued that news is structured according to unspoken values, rather than discovered. Here are some of their key terms...

List of values;

Frequency - needs to be newsworthy and news are unrolling 24/7.

Threshold - This is the size of an event that's needed for it considered newsworthy.

Proximity - This value is to do with how close to home the story is. For example the Manchester and London attacks VS the Somalia attack.

 The "Other" -  Paul Giroy

Non-white people in the media are often defined according to what makes them different from the (white) majority. These values are normally negative.
